Huskies can be good with other pets. The thing to remember is, huskies have a very strong prey-drive (meaning they instinctively hunt other animals); and if they are not socialized to smaller animals as puppies they will go after most small animals, and even some large animals they encounter.
The Husky drive to hunt can be a problem in living together with other animals – especially creatures like cats and rabbits, who tend to bolt when startled. Your Husky likes nothing better than a good chase, even if he doesn’t intend to harm the other creature!
But when socialized or carefully introduced to other pets, they get along very well with each other. This takes a bit of effort on the part of the Husky owner – you can’t just introduce your Husky to another pet and assume they will get along when your back is turned. They need a lot of supervision in the initial stages.
Remember that young Huskies are active and rambunctious, and may not be aware of their own size and strength. Your cat or smaller dog may not appreciate being showered with Husky affection as much as you do.
Huskies may behave aggressively toward strange dogs, but are generally good with other household dogs. In fact, Siberian and Alaskan Huskies are very social dogs who must have human or canine companionship. You may sometimes find that your Husky can seem a little jealous at any attention you give to other pets – make sure there is plenty of love and treats to go around!
Huskies are naturally very curious animals who are not particularly scared of strangers – however, if your family member or friend shows up with a strange animal in tow, be prepared for some loud Husky arguments! Also, if you live in a rural area or on a smallholding with livestock on the premises or nearby, your Husky must be well supervised to avoid him chasing and bothering the animals. It is also good to bear in mind that a goat or cow is capable of hurting your Husky when defending themselves against attack or annoyance. Keep your Husky busy and this will help discourage him from becoming excitable around your or your neighbours’ animals.
Overall, huskies can be good with other pets. More often than not, this depends on the owner and the dog’s upbringing.
